BOOK & MEDIA REVIEWS

A book or media review is a form of literary criticism in which a book, documentary, or film is analyzed based on content, style, and merit. A book review may be a primary source, opinion piece, summary review or scholarly review. (1,500 to 2,500 words)

CASE NOTES & COMMENTS

A case note is a scholarly report or a concise analysis of a recent, significant decision. Analysis is supported by citations to related cases and important secondary authorities. The basic difference between a case note, a comment, and an article is the breadth of the subject matter covered. A case note should analyze a single case. In contrast, a comment addresses an area of the law, focusing on specific issues, cases, and legislation. (3,500 to 7,000 words)

ARTICLES

Articles tend to analyze a problem and suggestion a solution. Such analysis usually articulates some background information to inform the reader, before turning to a novel argument. Along these lines, published articles regularly follow a traditional roadmap of introduction, background, analysis/argument, and conclusion, and provide a comprehensive treatment of a particular area of law. Articles tend to be formal in both the author’s tone and in the obligation to ground information and analysis in comprehensive substantive support via consistent citation. (10,000-20,000 words)
